I sink into my seat. Relax my muscles. Breathe deeply. Let the weight of daily life slip off.
Quiet my mind. Try again. Quiet … Nope … again …
My mind is like a pinball machine. A thought intrudes. Bounces against a post and careens off on a tangent hitting another thought. Bounces off again, in a different direction. Hits another post and bounces to another thought. Ric
ochets back to the first post. Off on another angle…. And on it goes.
I still again and try to let the ball slow and finally exit through the hole at the bottom of the machine.
Blessed quiet.
Another thought, like another ball, barrels through the chute, around the curve at the top, slides off a paddle, hits a post, is knocked toward another pin, picks up a different thought, bounces again …
Stop! Let the thought go. Let it bounce less and less and slide down the final paddle into the exit hole.
Deep breath.
Another.
Another ball in the chute, bouncing from pin to paddle to pin, bouncing, changing direction, making other connections, … Let it exit.
Try again.
Peace.
Silence.
Quiet.
Relaxation … ease …
Breathe deeply.
In.
Out.
In.
Out.
An awareness forms.
An immense silence.
Full. Not empty.
Rich and vibrant, yet silent.
He is there.
Always was.
Always is.
Another thought is shot through the chute and the silence vanishes. But for a moment I touched it. I saw how the immensity of universal quiet is filled with Him, how the stars and galaxies sing worship harmonies in octaves I normally cannot hear.
I will return here. It is worth the effort of quieting the pinball machine of my mind.
