There was a man
A tough man
A rough man
A hard man
Who lived a hard-scrabble life
Scraping to get by
He fought his whole life
To make it through.
He had a son

Who grew up much like his dad
A tough kid
A rough kid
A hard knocks kid.
The kid walked past the dad
The dad stretched out his arm
To give him a whack upside his head
“What’s that for?” The kid asked
Eyes watering
“I didn’t do nothin’ to deserve that.”
“That’s because you’re either
Goin’ into trouble
Or comin’ out of trouble.”
There was another Man
A strong man
A just man
A great man
Who lived and died
A hard life and death.
He strove His whole life
To make it clear
And died a difficult death
To make it right.
He had a kid

Who grew up his own way
A tough kid
A rough kid
A stubborn sad kid.
The kid walked toward his Dad
Expecting a whack upside the head.
This Dad stretched out His arms
Gathered His kid to His chest with
Strong arms
Warm arms
Wrapped His kid in
Big safe arms
Gave His kid a Huge Hug.
“What’s that for?” The kid asked
Eyes tearing up
“I didn’t do nothin’ to deserve that.”
“That’s because you’re either
Going into trouble
Or coming out of trouble.”

Which would you?
